How to remodel your kitchen

One way to dramatically update your home is to give your kitchen a new look. Outdated tile, cabinets, flooring and even the layout of your kitchen will date your entire home.

Trends in Kitchen Remodel

Layout

Depending on the year your home was built, you may have a long narrow, one-way galley kitchen. Modern homes now often feature an open layout with an island and bar.

When selecting the layout for your new kitchen, think about what’s important to you. How many cabinets do you need? Do you want a pantry? Is the kitchen where family and guests gather?

Cabinets and Counters

Your kitchen cabinets and counters are the focal point of your kitchen. In older homes, you’ll find dark woods like mahogany or cherry and oak. Many modern kitchens feature painted or glazed cabinets; giving your kitchen a fresh look.

Painting the cabinets of the island a different color or giving it a different countertop creates an accent piece, giving your kitchen character.

Countertops have moved from formica to harder, more durable materials like granite and quartz. Neutral colors such as gray and tan have become more popular.

Flooring

We’ve seen the trends of kitchen flooring move form linoleum to square ceramic tiles, even carpet at one point. Modern kitchens feature wood flooring or tiles with different shapes and lengths.
